Water Extraction & Structural Drying Services

Say you come home and find an inch of water across the kitchen floor. The first job is getting that water out. The second job is drying everything it touched, including the parts you cannot see, like the wood behind the walls.
Backingguitar Restoration is a referral service, not a repair company. Referral, not repair. We take your request, explain the steps in plain words, and pass you to an independent provider in our network. The provider does the pumping, the drying, and the moisture checks. Ask the provider about timing, equipment, and a written quote before you agree to anything.
Standing Water? Start With Safety
Say you come home and the carpet squishes under your shoes. Stop for a moment. Water and electricity do not mix.
If water is near outlets, cords, or appliances, stay out of the wet area. If you can reach the breaker box without stepping in water, turn off power to that part of the house. If you cannot, stay back and ask an electrician or your utility company for help.
Then ask a provider to get the water out. That step comes first.
Why Pulling Water Out Early Matters
Water does not sit still. It soaks into carpet pad, wood trim, and the bottom of drywall. The longer it stays, the farther it spreads.
In hot, humid weather, mold can start on damp surfaces in a day or two. Slow removal can also mean more materials need to be replaced. Many providers can respond quickly, so ask about availability when you reach out.
How Water Extraction Works
Extraction just means taking the liquid water out. It is not drying yet.
Pumps for Deeper Water
If water is a few inches deep, a provider may use a submersible pump. It moves water out through a hose, away from your home.
Wet Vacuums for Floors and Carpet
Once the deep water is gone, strong vacuums pull water from carpet, pad, and hard floors. Some providers use a wand tool that presses down and lifts water out of the carpet.
What Is Structural Drying?
Here is a scenario. The floor looks dry, but the wall behind the couch is still damp inside. That is what structural drying is for. It dries the frame, subfloor, and walls, not just the surface.
The goal is to bring materials back to a normal moisture level. Skipping this step is how musty smells and hidden mold start.
Air Movers
These are small, loud fans that push air across wet surfaces. They help water leave the material and enter the air.
Dehumidifiers
Moist air has to go somewhere. Dehumidifiers pull it out of the room so the walls and floors can keep releasing water.
Moisture Readings
A provider uses meters to check wood, drywall, and concrete. Readings show what is still wet and tell the provider when drying is done. Ask to see them.
How Long Does Drying Take?
There is no single answer. Many jobs take a few days, but it depends on how much water got in, what it soaked, and the weather. Thick wood framing and concrete dry slowly. A cold, damp week or a muggy summer stretch can slow things down too.
The provider checks readings each day and adjusts the equipment. You should hear what the numbers mean in simple terms.
Spring Floods, Storms, and Frost
In areas with spring flooding, heavy storms, and full basements with sump pumps, a failed pump can bring water in fast. In older frame houses and ranch homes, cold winters can lead to burst pipes and slow leaks. Hot, humid summers make drying harder because the air is already damp. A provider familiar with local weather knows what to plan for.
What You Can Do While You Wait
A few small steps can help while you wait for a provider:
- Take photos and short videos of the water and damaged items before anything moves.
- Move small furniture, rugs, and electronics to a dry spot.
- Lift curtains off wet floors.
- Open windows only if the air outside is dry.
- Do not use a household vacuum on water.
- Keep children and pets out of the wet area.
Providers can often help document damage for a claim. Some policies may cover sudden damage, so check your policy and ask your insurer what it requires.
Who Actually Does the Work?
Let us be clear. Backingguitar Restoration does not send out trucks, pumps, or fans. We are a referral service. When you request an estimate or call, we pass your details to an independent provider in our network. That provider sets the schedule, the price, and the work. Your agreement is with the provider.
Questions to Ask the Provider
If this is your first time, here is a short list to keep handy:
- Can you tell me when someone could arrive?
- Will you pump out standing water first, then dry the structure?
- What equipment will you set up, and for how long?
- Will you take moisture readings each day and share them?
- Is the quote written, and what could change the price?
- Can you help document the damage for my insurer?

Water Extraction & Structural Drying Services FAQ
What is the difference between water extraction and structural drying?
Extraction removes standing and soaked-in liquid water with pumps and vacuums. Structural drying comes next. It uses fans and dehumidifiers to pull moisture out of walls, floors, and framing so mold is less likely.
How long does it take to dry a house after water damage?
Many jobs take a few days, but it depends on how much water got in, which materials got wet, and the weather. The provider should check moisture readings daily and tell you when drying is done.
Can I dry out my home with household fans?
Fans can help a little with a small spill. For real flooding, water hides in walls and under floors. Providers use stronger equipment and meters to check that those hidden areas are truly dry.
